Where to go in May |
Many countries have a pleasant climate (mild temperatures, low rainfall or dry weather) in May. Some countries are to be avoided due to unfavorable weather conditions (high or low temperatures, heavy rainfall or cyclones which often cause heavy damage).
| Africa |
|
Temperatures are mild and rainfall is very low or nonexistent in most South African countries in May. They are abundant in the countries located near the Ecuador (Burundi, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya). They are also high on the coasts of the West African countries (Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Benin). The countries located further north and further have a dry climate in May. Rainfall is nonexistent and temperatures are high in the Sahara desert (Mauritania, Algeria, northern Mali, Libya).
| America |
|
Temperatures range between 28 and 30° in Central America and rainfall is high in most Central American countries (Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize) in May. Temperatures vary in North America from 17° in Canada to 30° in the southeast of the United States and Mexico (rainfall is low). Rainfall is high and temperatures reach 30° in the countries located near the Equator (Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana). Rainfall is much lower and temperatures are cooler (10 to 20°) in the countries located further south (Chile, Argentina, Uruguay). Abundant rains begin to fall on some Caribbean islands.
| Asia |
|
Rainfall is high in May in most countries of southeastern Asia (Burma, Bhutan, China, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam) except in Nepal, in western China, on the east coast of India and on the islands located in the south of Indonesia. Temperatures are mild and rainfall is moderate in the Central Asian countries. The climate is hot and dry in most Middle East countries (temperatures often exceed 30° during the daytime and rainfall is nonexistent). The climate is milder in Turkey (Mediterranean coast, central mountains and northern coast).
| Europe |
|
Temperatures reach 15° and rainfall is low in May in the North European countries (from Norway to the Baltic countries). Temperatures are mild (20°) and rainfall is also low in eastern Europe. The rains are higher in most West European countries (temperatures reach 16° during the daytime in western Europe). The climate is mild in May in the South European countries (temperatures exceed 20° and rainfall is moderate in most countries and territories).
| Oceania |
|
North of the Equator, the climate is relatively dry on several islands (Northern Mariana Islands), while the rainy season begins on Micronesian islands. The climate is also relatively dry in May on the islands located on the other side of the Equator (Papua New Guinea, Tokelau, Tonga, Samoa, American Samoa). Temperatures range on these islands between 26 and 30°. They drop gradually in May in the southwest of Oceania (Australia and New Zealand). Rainfall is moderate in New Zealand and on the southern coast of Australia. They are very low or nonexistent in central and northern Australia.
