Climate

 
Afghanistan has two different climatic zones.

Temperatures are higher in the plains (5° in January, 40° in July) than in the mountains (-15 to -20° in January, 0 to 25° in July depending on altitude). Rainfall is very low (100 to 400 mm per year) but snowfall is often abundant in winter in the mountains. Sunshine is moderate in winter (six to seven hours a day) and very high in summer (twelve to thirteen hours a day).

The central mountains
The mountains locted in the center of Afghanistan have a continental climate with four seasons. Rainfall is low (400 mm per year). Permanent snow covers the highest peaks.

Winter (December to February)
Temperatures range from 5 to 20° depending on altitude and snowfall is often abundant.

Spring (March to May)
Temperatures rise and melting snow often cause flooding.

Summer (June to August)
Temperatures range from 0 to 30° depending on altitude (they are lower at night). Rainfall is nonexistent.

Autumn (September to November)
Temperatures drop and the first snowfall occurs in October.

The plains
The plains have an arid climate with four seasons.

Winter (December to February)
Temperatures range between 5 and 10° (they are lower when cold winds blow over the plains). Rainfall is very low.

Spring (March to May)
Temperatures are mild and rainfall is low.

Summer (June to August)
Temperatures are very high (38 to 40°) and rainfall is nonexistent. Strong dust-laden winds blow almost every day.

Autumn (September to November)
Temperatures drop and rainfall is nonexistent (September and October) or very low (November).
