Climate

 
Algeria has three different climatic zones.

Temperatures are high in summer (July, August) and mild in winter (they are low in the mountains). Rains (November, January, February, March) are abundant in the east, moderate in the west and very low in the desert.

The coast (north of Algeria)
The coast has a Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers and mild and rainy winters. Temperatures range between 17° in winter (December to February) and 30° in summer (July and August). The rains (750 mm per year) are relatively high for several months (October to April) and then they are very low the rest of the year (May to September) . It rains more in the east than in the west. Sunshine is very high (5 to 6 hours in winter and 11 to 12 hours in summer).

The plateaus and the mountains
The plateaus located south of the coastal plain and between two mountains have a semi-arid climate. Temperatures vary more in summer (40° during the daytime, 10° at night) than in winter (15° during the daytime, 2° at night). Rains range from 100 to 400 mm per year and humidity is low throughout the year. The mountains have a cool climate in summer and a cold climate in winter. Rains mostly fall from November to April. They are more abundant in the east (1 000 mm per year) than in the west (600 mm). It snows in December to February and March above 1 500 meters.

Desert (south of Algeria)
The desert has a very dry climate. Temperatures reach 20° from December to February, 30° from March to, May, 40° from June to September (they drop to 5° at night) and 30° in October and November. Rainfall is irregular and very low (less than 150 mm per year). Sunshine is very high (9 to 10 hours in winter and 12 to 13 hours in summer).
