Climate

 
Turkey has three different climatic zones.

Temperatures vary more during the year on the plateau (0 to 5° in January, 30 to 38° in July) than on the north coast (10° in January, 25° in July) and on the south coast and on the east coast (14° in January, 32° in July). Annual rainfall is higher on the coasts (600 to 1300 mm on the south coast and on the west coast ; 600 to 2 200 mm on the north coast) than in the center (300 to 600 mm). Sunshine ranges from three to four hours a day in winter (December
to February) to twelve to thirteen hours a day in summer (June to August).

The southern and western coasts of Turkey
The south coast and the west coast have a Mediterranean climate with four seasons. Rainfall varies from 600 to 1300 mm per year.

Winter (December to February)
Temperatures are stable (13 to 15°) and rainfall is high.

Spring (March to May)
Temperatures rise progressively (20° in April, 25° in May) and rainfall is moderate in spring.

Summer (June to August)
Temperatures are high (32°) and rainfall is very low or nonexistent. Humidity is high.

Autumn (September to November)
Temperatures drop steadily (28° in September, 14° in October, 10° in November) and rainfall is moderate.

The central plateau
The plateau located in the center of Turkey has a continental climate with four seasons. Rainfall varies from 300 to 600 mm per year (the rains are heavier in the mountains).

Winter (December to February)
Temperatures are low (0 to 5°) and rainfall is moderate.

Temperatures sometimes drop to -30° and snow is abundant in the mountains located in the east.

Spring (March to May)
Temperatures are mild (15° in March, 25° in May) and rainfall is abundant in the east and moderate in the west and in the center of the plateau.

Summer (June to August)
Temperatures reach 30° (38° in southeast) and rainfall is very low or nonexistent. Humidity is low.

Autumn (September to November)
Temperatures drop progressively (25° in September, 11° in November) and rainfall is low (the rains are heavy in the mountains located in the east).

The northern coast of Turkey
The north coast has a temperate climate with regular rainfall throughout the year (1 100 mm per year in the west, 600 mm per year in the center, 2200 mm per year in the east).

Winter (December to February)
Temperatures reach 10° and rainfall is high.

Spring (March to May)
Temperatures rise progressively (12° in March, 20° in May) and rainfall is moderate.

Summer (June to August)
Temperatures reach 25° and rainfall is moderate.

Autumn (September to November)
Temperatures drop steadily (22° in September, 20° in October, 18° in November) and rainfall is abundant.
