Azerbaijan has two different climatic zones.
Temperatures range between 7° in January and 30° in July in the central plain (they are lower in the mountains). Rainfall is low (150 to 300 mm per year) except in the southwest and in the mountains (1 200 mm per year).
The central plain
The plain located in the center of Azerbaijan has a subtropical climate with a rainy season and a dry season.
Rainy season (October to February)
Temperatures progressively drop (20° in October to 6° in February) and rainfall is low except in the southeast where the rains are heavy.
Dry season (March to September)
Temperatures rise steadily (10° in March, 20° in May, 30° in July and August) and rainfall is very low or nonexistent.
The mountains (northern and western Azerbaijan)
The mountains located in the north and in the west have a continental climate.
Winter (December to February)
Temperatures sometimes reach -20 or -30°. Snowfall is high.
Spring (March to May)
Temperatures rise.
Summer (June to August)
Temperatures are mild.
Autumn (September to November)
Temperatures progressively drop.
