Climate

 
China has five different climatic zones.

Temperatures vary more during the year in the north (-15° in January to 30° in July) than in the south of China (15° in January to 33° in July). The rains are heavier in the south (2 000 mm per year) than in the north (100 to 500 mm per year).

Northeastern China (Beijing - Changchun)
The northeast has a continental climate. Rainfall is moderate (500 mm per year).

Winter (December to February)
Temperatures range between 0 and -15° (they sometimes drop to -30°). Rainfall is very low or nonexistent. Sunshine is moderate (five to six hours a day).

Spring (March to May)
Temperatures are mild (15 to 25°) and rainfall is low. Sand-laden winds pass through the northeast in April.

Summer (June to August)
Temperatures are high (28-30°) and rainfall is abundant in July and August. Sunshine is high (nine hours a day).

Autumn (September to November)
Temperatures cool down (23° in September, 10° in November) and rainfall is very low.

Central China (Chongqing, Wuhan, Shanghai)
The center has a temperate climate. Rains fall regularly all year round (1 000 to 1 300 mm per year).

Winter (December to February)
Temperatures range between 10° during the daytime and 1° at night. Rainfall is moderate.

Spring (March to May)
Temperatures rise progressively (12° in March, 23° in May) and rainfall is high.

Summer (June to August)
Temperatures reach 30° and rainfall is abundant.

Autumn (September to November)
Temperatures steadily drop (25° in September, 10° in November) and rainfall is moderate (except in September because of typhoons which follow the coast).

Southeastern China (Kunming - Guangzhou - Quanzhou)
The southeast has a subtropical climate with a rainy season and a dry season. Rainfall is abundant on the coast (2 000 mm per year) and moderate far away from the sea (900 mm per year).

Rainy season (April to September)
Temperatures are mild in March and April (20 to 25°) and then reach 33° in May, June to August and September. Rainfall is abundant (typhoons dump huge amounts of water in July, August and September). Humidity is very high.

Dry season (October to March)
Temperatures are mild (25° in October, 13 to 18° in January and in February, 20° in March). Rainfall is moderate.

Southwestern China (Tibet)
The southwest has a temperate climate. Rainfall is low (450 mm per year) and sunshine is high all year round.

Winter (December to February)
Temperatures are low in the valleys (8° during the daytime, -10° at night) and very low in the mountains. Ssnowfalls are very low.

Spring (March to May)
Temperatures rise (12° in March, 20° in May) and rainfall is very low or nonexistent.

Summer (June to August)
Temperatures reach 20-22° (they lose ten degrees at night) and rainfall (thunderstorms) is moderate.

Autumn (September to November)
Temperatures progressively drop (20° in September, 11° in November) and rainfall is low.

Northwestern China
The northwest has a dry continental climate. Rainfall is very low (100 to 250 mm per year).

Winter (December to February)
Temperatures range between 0 and 10° during the daytime and between -13 and -17° at night (they sometimes drop to -30°). Rainfall is very low.

Spring (March to May)
Temperatures steadily rise and rainfall is very low.

Summer (June to August)
Temperatures reach 30° and rainfall is very low.

Autumn (September to November)
Temperatures drop progressively and rainfall is very low.
