Canary Islands

Climate

The Canary Islands have a subtropical climate with a short rainy season and a long dry season.

Temperatures range between 20° in winter and 28° in summer (they sometimes reach 30°). The climate is cooler in the mountains located in the center of each island (frost occurs sometimes and some snow occasionally falls above 1 900 meters. Rainfall is moderate (750 mm per year on the northern coasts of the islands and 250 mm per year on the other shores). Sunshine is very high throughout the year (2 800 hours). Sea temperature ranges from 22° C in summer to 17° in winter.

Dry season (March to October)
Temperatures range from 22 to 28° (they lose about 5° at night) and rainfall is very low (28 dry days in May) or nonexistent (30 dry days in July and August). Heavy rains sometimes fall in April. They cause a strong momentary drop in temperatures (16°). Sunshine is very high (nine to eleven hours a day).

Rainy season (November to February)
Temperatures are stable (20 to 21°). They are sometimes high (28°) in February when a warm wind goes through the Canary Islands. The rains usually fall during nine days each month (they are higher on the northern coasts of the islands of the archipelago than on the other coasts because the ancient volcanoes of each island block most humid clouds). Sunshine is high (six hours per day)
