Chile

Climate

Chile has three different climatic zones

Temperatures are mild in the north (15 à 23°) and in the center (14 à 27°) and low in the south (5 à 22°). Annual rainfall is higher in the south (2 500 to 5000 mm) than in the center (500 to 1000 mm) and in the north (20 mm).

Northern Chile
The north has an arid climate. Temperatures range between 23° in January and 15° in July. Rainfall is very low or nonexistent. The atmosphere is very dry and the sky is constantly blue on the plateau. Humidity is very high and the fog is very present on the coast.

Central Chile
The center has a temperate climate with four seasons.

Winter (June to August)
Temperatures are low (13°) and rainfall is high. Sunshine is low (two to three hours a day on the coast, three to four hours a day far away from the sea).

Spring (September to November)
Temperatures rise progressively and rainfall is low.

Summer (December to February)
Temperatures range from 22° (southern part of the central region) to 28° (northern part of the central region). Rainfall is very low or nonexistent. Sunshine is high (eight to nine hours a day on the coast, nine to ten hours a day away from the sea).

Autumn (March to May)
Temperatures drop slowly and rainfall is low.

Southern Chile
The south has an oceanic climate with four seasons. Rains (2 500 to 5 000 mm per year) fall regularly throughout the year.

Winter (June to August)
Temperatures is low (5°) and rainfall is abundant.

Spring (September to November)
Temperatures rise and rainfall is high.

Summer (December to February)
Temperatures reach 20° and rainfall is moderate.

Autumn (March to May)
Temperatures drop and rainfall is high.

The extreme south of Chile has a less rainy climate (400 mm per year) because the mountains stop the moisture-laden winds but temperatures are much lower (12° in January, 3° in July).
