Climate

Tunisia has three different climatic zones.

Temperatures are high from June to September (30° in the north, 30 to 40° in the center and in the south) and mild the rest of the year (October to May). The annual rains are moderate in the north (400 mm on the coast and 1 500 mm in the mountains) and very low in the center and in the south (100 mm). Sunshine is very high (twelve hours a day from June to September ; seven to eight hours a day from December to February).

Northern Tunisia
The north has a Mediterranean climate with a hot season and a mild season.

Hot season (June to September)
Temperatures exceed 30° and rainfall is very low or nonexistent. Sunshine reaches twelve hours a day.

Mild season (October to May)
Temperatures range between 15 and 20° except in the mountains where they sometimes drop to -5°. Rainfall is moderate on the coast (500 mm) and high in the mountains (900 to 1500 mm).

Hot season (June to September)
Temperatures rarely exceed 30° on the coast because sea winds cool the atmosphere (they reach 35° far away from the sea). Sunshine is high (ten hours a day).

Mild season (October to May)
Temperatures range between 17 and 20° during the dayrime (they drop to 7° at night in December, January and February). Rainfall is moderate (100 to 400 mm) except in the east of the central plain where they are nonexistent. Sunshine is high (eight to eleven hours a day).

Southern Tunisia
The south has an arid climate with a hot season and a mild season.

Hot season (June to September)
Temperatures reach 45-50° and sunshine is very high.

Mild season (October to May)
Temperatures range between 20° during the daytime and 8° at night in December, January and February (nights are sometimes very cold). Rainfall is very low (150 mm) or nonexistent in some years.
