Climate

 
India has seven different climatic zones.

Temperatures are mild in January (15 to 25°) and very high in May (30 to 40°). Rains ((June to October) are moderate on the central plateaus and high in the coastal and inner plains.

The northwestern mountains of India
The mountains located in the northwest have an alpine climate with four seasons. The peaks are permanently snow-capped beyond 4 300 meters.

Winter (December to February)
The climate is cool at 2 000 meters and cold at an higher altitude. Temperatures are low (9° at 2 000 meters) and the first snow occurs in January.

Spring (March to May)
Temperatures are mild (18° at 2 000 meters) and rainfall is moderate.

Summer (June to September)
Temperatures are mild (20° at 2 000 meters) and rainfall is abundant.

Autumn (October to November)
Temperatures drop slowly (17° in October, 13° in November) and rainfall is low.

The Ganges Valley (northern India)
The Ganges valley has a subtropical climate with a rainy season and a dry season. The rains are heavier in the west (1800 mm per year) than in the east (800 mm per year).

Rainy season (June to September)
Temperatures are high (32 to 34°) and rainfall is abundant. Humidity is very high.

Dry season (October to May)
Temperatures drop until January (22°) and then rise strongly until May (38°). Rainfall is very low or nonexistent. Sunshine is high.

Rajasthan (northwest India)
Rajasthan has an arid climate with a rainy season and a dry season. Rainfall varies from 200 mm per year in the west to 500 mm per year in the east.

Rainy season (July to September)
Temperatures are high (33°) and rainfall is moderate. Humidity is very high.

Dry season (October to June)
Temperatures drop from October (33°) to January (22°) and then strongly rise until May (40°). Rainfall is very low or nonexistent. Sunshine is high.

The western coast of India
The west coast has a subtropical climate with a rainy season and a dry season. Rainfall is very high (2 000 to 3 000 mm per year).

Rainy season (May to October)
Temperatures are stable (30°) and rainfall is abundant. Humidity is very high.

Dry season (November to April)
Temperatures are constant (30°) and rainfall is very low or nonexistent.

The central plateaus
The plateaus located in the center of India have a subtropical climate with a rainy season and a dry season. Rainfall ranges between 800 and 1 100 mm per year.

Rainy season (June to October)
Temperatures are high (30°) and rainfall is moderate.

Dry season (November to May)
Temperatures are stable until January (30°) and then rise sharply until May (35 to 40°). Rainfall is very low or nonexistent.

The eastern coast of India
The east coast has a tropical climate with a rainy season and a dry season. Rainfall varies from 1 000 to 1 400 mm per year.

Rainy season (June to October ; June to December in the southeast)
Temperatures are high (31° ; 30° to 35° in the southeast) and rainfall Is abundant. Humidity is very high.

Dry season (November to May ; January to May in the southeast)
Temperatures drop a little bit until January (28°) and then strongly rise until May (32° ; 36° in the southeast). Rainfall is very low or nonexistent.

Northeastern India (Assam)
The northeast has a very humid subtropical climate with a long rainy season and a short dry season. Rainfall ranges between 2 500 and 11 000 mm per year.

Rainy season (April to October)
Temperatures are stable (30°) and rainfall is abundant.

Dry season (December to March)
Temperatures drop until January (22°) and then rise until March (30°).
