Madeira

Climate

The island of Madeira has a subtropical climate with a rainy season and a dry season.

Temperatures are mild on the coasts (20° in January to 25° in July) but they are often low in the mountains. The annual rains are higher on the north coast (1 200 mm) than on the south coast (550 mm) because the mountains (3 000 mm) located in the center of the island stop most humid clouds. Sunshine is high all year round (five to six hours a day in winter, seven to eight hours in summer). Sea temperature varies from 17° in February to 22° in September.

Rainy season (October to February)
Temperatures range between 20 and 22° during the daytime (they sometimes drop to 13° at night). Sunshine is moderate (six to seven hours a day) because the sky is often cloudy. December is the least sunny month (140 hours). Rainfall is moderate on the south coast, high on the north coast and very high in the mountains.

Dry season (March to September)
Temperatures range from 20° in March to 25° in July, August and September. Sunshine is high (seven to eight hours per day) because the sky is blue most of the time. Rainfall is very low.
